TV Priest

A roaring post-punk band from England, TV Priest play hard, energetic rock music whose physical power is matched by the social and political commentary of their lyrics. Vocalist Charlie Drinkwater speaks more than he sings as he shares cynical and impressionistic verbiage focused on contemporary culture over the noisy but grooving accompaniment of the band. TV Priest introduced their sound in 2020 with a pair of decisive independent singles, "House of York" and "Runner Up," and they refined their approach on their full-length debut, 2021's Uppers. The band found themselves stuck at home after the LP was released, and their second album, 2022's My Other People, reflected a broader emotional range without sapping their strength. TV Priest was formed in 2019 by four longtime friends from the Hackney Wick neighborhood of East London. Vocalist Charlie Drinkwater and guitarist Alex Sprogis had been working as graphic artists, bassist and keyboard player Nic Bueth ran an independent recording studio, and drummer Ed Kelland had previously worked with Sprogis in a group called Torches. Having known one another since they were teenagers, the four decided they wanted to take another stab at making music together and started writing and rehearsing material. In November 2019, the band, now called TV Priest, played their first show in a venue they described as "an industrial freezer" where they shared the stage with a washing machine and several deep fat fryers. In 2020, the band released their first song, a screed against the Royal Family called "House of York," and were hoping to tour, but the COVID-19 lockdown prevented them from playing further shows. Undaunted, they shared a second track, "Runner Up," and began work on a full-length album. They struck a deal with Hand in Hive, an independent label and management firm, and the album Uppers was scheduled for release in November 2020. However, TV Priest's music came to the attention of the respected American indie label Sub Pop, and they became involved in the project. Sub Pop arranged to issue the album and Uppers came out in February 2021. The album was well-received, but it appeared at a time when the COVID-19 pandemic prevented the group from playing live dates in support, and the group found themselves stranded at home, unable to do much about the album's success. As they began writing new songs, the tone of the material became less aggressive and more introspective, without abandoning their jagged trademark style. As the music world began to open up, Sub Pop delivered TV Priest's second album, the emotionally dynamic My Other People, in June 2022.
