Performances of J.S. Bach's gamba sonatas, heard in modern times more frequently on the cello, usually focus on the gamba/cello part. With a big name like Leonard Rose on cello, it would be hard for this not to be true. Unless of course the individual playing the harpsichord/piano part was Glenn Gould. This 1974 recording of Rose and Gould is, appropriately, all about Gould's Bach sensibilities and interpretations, with Rose following his lead. Fans of Gould's Bach playing will hear something in this recording of the gamba sonatas that is rarely heard in other performances; that is, the innate importance of the "accompanimental" part and the potential for dialogue between the two instruments. Each of the sonatas is characteristically laid-back and relaxed without seeming stodgy or dragging. Gould's own brand of ornamentation can be heard throughout the album (often quite different from the ornaments we may have come to expect) and Rose duplicates them brilliantly. While these performances are often contrary to what is now often referred to as "period performance practice," they still represent pure, committed, and convincing music-making at its absolutely finest. Gould fans will no doubt savor this CD reissue of the original LP, and listeners interested in a truly rhapsodic reading of these sonatas will not find fault with this selection.
