To over-simplify it, doom metal as a genre comes from the sound of Black Sabbath, whose sound could be argued as coming from Blue Cheer, Deep Purple and others. As the '70s progressed, a legion of bands ranging from Sir Lord Baltimore to Flower Travellin' Band adapted the sound of Sabbath and put their own spin on it, but it wasn't until the early '80s that most agree that doom as a genre was created. From Trouble to Saint Vitus to Witchfinder General to Cathedral and on and on, doom metal has grown from a weird offshoot of punk and metal to something much larger and more revered. Doom is characterized by its slower riffs, especially in the '80s when thrash and speed metal ruled the land and heavy music was an arms race to go faster and faster.
