Sylvie

Named for a song by British folk-rockers Matthews Southern Comfort, Sylvie is the nostalgia-steeped collaborative project of SoCal native Ben Schwab (Golden Daze, Drugdealer). Reminiscent of the amber-hued sounds of the Laurel Canyon scene, the project and its 2022 eponymous debut album were inspired by Schwab coming across a box of tapes that had been recorded by his father's band in the 1970s. Having already spent several years writing, arranging, recording, and performing in such 1960s- and '70s-influenced acts as Golden Daze and Drugdealer, Ben Schwab discovered the instigating tape reels in a small town in Ohio, 2,000 miles from home. They had been recorded by his father, John Schwab, and his band Mad Anthony in a barn in Southern California in 1975. Among the heartfelt songs was a cover of 1971's "Sylvie," leading Schwab to refer to the recordings as "Silvies." Using them as inspiration while taking his own sonic route, the younger Schwab eventually compiled seven songs (six originals and his own cover of "Sylvie") that he recorded in his garage in the Silverlake neighborhood of Los Angeles. Among its contributors were pedal steel guitarist Connor Gallagher, drummer Sam Kauffman-Skloff, and vocalists Marina Allen and Sam Burton, who sang lead on two tracks each. The Sylvie LP arrived on Full Time Hobby in October 2022.
