Jonas Nordberg
Lutenist Jonas Nordberg is a star in the world of Renaissance plucked stringed instruments worldwide, having issued several critically acclaimed recordings in the late 2010s. Besides the lute, he plays the theorbo and several other stringed instruments from the 16th through the 19th centuries.
Nordberg attended the Royal College of Music in Stockholm and went on to the Mozarteum University in Salzburg, Austria, where he earned a master's degree in 2011. Since then, he has cultivated an international career that has included solo performances and recordings, duets and small-group performances with other musicians, vocal accompaniment, and contemporary music of various kinds. His partner in performing lute song repertory is soprano Ruby Hughes, and he has played the viol music of Marin Marais and other 17th century French composers. Nordberg has also played contemporary music for viol, theorbo, and, with a trio called KROCK, contemporary electric guitar music. He has been active as a continuo player with many of Europe's leading early music groups, including the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Concerto Köln, and the Drottningholm Baroque Ensemble. Nordberg has appeared with large ensembles outside the sphere of early music, including the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the Swedish Wind Ensemble, With choreographer Kenneth Kvarnström, he has experimented with fusions of Baroque music and contemporary dance. With the Stockholm chamber ensemble Operabyrån, he has performed operas by female composers. Nordberg has served as artist-in-residence at the Stockholm Concert Hall (Konserthuset) for the years 2018-2020. He released his debut album, featuring music by Robert de Visée, Silvius Leopold Weiss, and François Dufaut on the Eudora label in 2015. Subsequently signed to the major label BIS, he has released several albums, including an album of intabulations by Girolamo Kapsberger in 2019.
