Christopher Glynn
Pianist Christopher Glynn is widely noted as an accompanist who has worked with some of the world's top instrumentalists and singers. He also has a flourishing solo career, is the longtime director of the Ryedale Festival, and is a noted educator.
Glynn was born on September 5, 1974, in Leicester, England. He studied music at New College, Oxford, and then went on for further piano work with John Streets in France and with Malcolm Martineau at the Royal Academy of Music in London. Glynn has served as accompanist to top singers in Britain and abroad, including Roderick Williams, Bryn Terfel, and Felicity Lott. His instrumental accompaniment credits include work with violinist Daniel Hope, clarinetist Julian Bliss, and trumpeter Tine Thing Helseth. For a time, he also served as accompanist to the vocal group The Sixteen. As a soloist, Glynn has appeared at leading venues, including Wigmore Hall, Carnegie Hall, and the BBC Proms. He has also performed in countries around the world, including in East Asia and unusual destinations such as Brazil and Sri Lanka. He became the artistic director of the Ryedale Festival in 2010.
Glynn has participated as an accompanist on several noted recordings, beginning with The Shepherd on the Rock, a collection of 19th century vocal and chamber music, on the Signum Classics label. He joined a variety of prominent singers on the Hyperion label's 2017 collection Songs by Donald Swann, and the following year, he backed Williams on the first of a pair of recordings devoted to English translations of major Schubert songs; he commissioned those translations in hopes of making the songs more accessible to general audiences. In 2021, Glynn joined historical-performance violinist Rachel Podger on a Channel Classics album of completed fragments of violin-and-piano works by Mozart. Glynn is a professor of music at the Royal College of Music.
