Camino

Sean Shibe

Classical - Released August 20, 2021 | PentaTone

Hi-Res Booklet
Introspective exploration of French-Spanish musical borders. Camino is guitarist Sean Shibe’s first Pentatone album, an introspective programme exploring French-Spanish musical borders, a pilgrimage leading from Ravel’s Pavane pour une Infante défunte, Satie’s Gymnopédie No. 1 and Gnossiennes No. 1 and No. 3, Poulenc’s Sarabande, De Falla’s Miller’s Dance and Homaje pour le Tombeau de Debussy and José’s Pavana triste all the way to Mompou’s Cançons i dansas No. 6 and No. 10, as well as his Suite compostelana. Shibe has deliberately granted Mompou a central role on this album, as his music demonstrates that melancholy, aimlessness and a whole host of other feelings are not things to be avoided or fixed or solved, but experiences to be felt deeply: not with sad nostalgia, but with genuine wonder and excitement at what this means for the future. © Pentatone

Evolution

Aynur Begutov

Concertos - Released December 11, 2020 | Vision Fugitive

Hi-Res Booklet
Cherishing the musical heritage of his country, Russian guitarist Aynur Begutov devotes here an entire program (ranging from the late eighteenth century to the present day) to the Russian seven-string guitar (D, B, G, D, B, G, D), which became very popular in Russia and Ukraine since it was introduced at the end of the eighteenth century by Andrei Ossipovitch Sikhra (1773-1850). Its tessitura being wider and its sound more ample, it knew very quickly a great vogue (which will exceed the borders) because of its perfect adequacy with the execution of songs and folk dances, a little known repertoire to discover, and very well illustrated by Aynur Begutov. Luys Milan

Sébastien Llinares

Classical - Released October 16, 2020 | Paraty

Hi-Res
From the spanish “Siglo de Oro”, writer, vihuelist and composer Luys de Milan sends us a message of freedom, originality and refinement. One wonders how, centuries later, this message can still be so alive. Milan composes his Fantaisies, his Pavanes, his Tientos to express his "faculties of musical imagination and ingenuity". Here rubato, idiomaticity and invention reign supreme; no trace of austere compositional thought or imposed playing technique… Just pure balance and fluidity. The score stimulates the freedom, virtuosity and musicality of the performer. And this music, so light and carefree, is nonetheless infused with the heritage of several centuries of musical Hispanism.

Aranjuez

Thibaut García

Classical - Released October 2, 2020 | Warner Classics

Hi-Res Booklet Distinctions Diapason d'or - 4F de Télérama
Joaquín Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez is arguably the most popular work in the entire guitar repertory, and one might reasonably ask whether the world needs one more recording. No one, however, who hears this reading by guitarist Thibaut Garcia and the Orchestre national du Capitole de Toulouse, is going to ask again: it is exceptional. Garcia's performance has a remarkable quality of grace, and grace in reserve, with an uncannily smooth guitar tone. Is it a French, rather than a Spanish, Concierto de Aranjuez? Maybe, but Rodrigo was a student of Dukas, and the liveliness of the dialogues between the guitar and the various instruments of the orchestra, often lost in heavily Spanish-regional performances, are wonderful. Part of the credit, of course, goes to the orchestra and conductor Ben Glassberg. Three more works, as uncommon as the Concierto de Aranjuez is common, fill out the program. There are four short works by Regino Sainz de la Maza, a contemporary of Rodrigo (and the dedicatee and first performer of the Concierto de Aranjuez) who wrote music in a similar vein. The only glimmer of a complaint one might raise against this release is that its Aranjuez title (Aranjuez is an iconic Spanish town near Madrid) refers only to the first two works on the program; after Sainz de la Maza, the music is not just from France but quintessentially French. The Musique de cour d'après Robert de Visée of composer Alexandre Tansman, for guitar and orchestra, is a late piece of French neoclassicism, composed in 1960. It is not a transcription of music by lutenist-composer de Visée but a set of short lyrical fantasies on dances by de Visée, and it has a gorgeous dark quality captured expertly by Garcia. His transcriptions of de Visée close out a superb program, strengthened by ideally clear engineering of the guitar. A landmark recording.© TiVo

Robert de Visée : Complete Works for Guitar

Rafael Andia

Classical - Released September 10, 2015 | harmonia mundi

Distinctions 4 étoiles Classica
In 1986, harmonia mundi released an album of three vinyl records presenting the complete works of Robert de Visée, just three hundred years after the publication of his second "Livre pour la guittare dédié au Roy". This was a considerable event for all fans of the work of this player of the guitar, lute, theorbo and most probably the viola da gamba. A composer at the court of Louis XIV, to whom he taught the guitar, de Visée had not yet been the subject of in-depth research. These three discs of dances were grouped in "Suites" or by key. Their phrasing, accents and tempi are subject to a remarkable study and cross-referenced against the choreography of the period. They represented a considerable contribution to the heritage of the instrument and of early music in general.Born in France to a family of Spanish Republicans, Rafael Andia has left his mark, both in terms of contemporary music and in terms of exploring Baroque music for his instrument, of which he has done much to raise the profile. For this recording, he uses a Charles Besnainou guitar copied from an old model, strung entirely with bare gut, a simple E-string and the D-string on the thumb side, which allow the performer to obtain a rounded sound that does nothing to hamper the brilliance of his playing. © François Hudry/Qobuz
