Roc Marciano's first full-length with the Alchemist is an easy success. The longtime collaborators share a similar production aesthetic, both having popularized rapping over loops with no drums or minimal percussion, and the two have a natural chemistry. The Alchemist's loops are often haunting yet leisurely, filled with dissolves and other production tricks, and even when he's chopping up vocal samples so that they're interrupted mid-breath, it hardly feels jarring and there's still plenty of space left open for the lyrics. Marciano's vocal delivery is similarly quick-witted but never forceful, balancing deadpan humor and clever pop culture references with stark narratives about drug dealing. The Action Bronson-featuring second track, "Daddy Kane," is one of the album's more boisterous moments, but later songs bluntly describe heartlessness and alienation. At one point, Marciano claims he didn't bleed after being bit by Dracula. Ice-T appears on "The Horns of Abraxas" with an especially grim story about finding dead bodies in a car trunk. Yet there's nothing sensationalist about the album's most brutal lyrics, and they're balanced out by the record's sly sense of humor and casually innovative production.

MF Doom, The Masked Man

Daniel Dumile, alias MF DOOM, lived a thousand lives and his career was a succession of false starts and bright flashes. Before passing away on the 31st of October, 2020, Dumile had been a young virtuoso rapper welcomed with open arms by the music industry, then an outcast that sneaked back onto the scene through the back door after years of wandering (now masked), the 'go-to-guy' of independent rap during the 2000s and then some kind of Indie messiah as dubbed by Thom Yorke and Flying Lotus. Elusive, whimsical, a trickster and a money maker, DOOM rewrote the rules of rap music, rubbed people up the wrong way and paved the way for a whole generation of MCs.

Reggaeton in 10 Albums

A combination of Jamaican dancehall, American hip-hop, Caribbean rhythms and Spanish wit, reggaeton has, since its birth in the early 90s, shaken the world of pop music time and time again. From DJ Playero’s first mixtapes to Daddy Yankee’s “Barrio Fino” and Don Chezina’s “Tra-Tra-Tra, Puerto Rican musicians and their Colombian counterparts in Medellin have done their utmost to take over the world. In the last decade, they have done just that thanks to artists such as Luis Fonsi, J. Balvin and Bad Bunny. Read on for 10 of the genre’s most important albums. Reggaeton won’t be going anywhere any time soon.

Warp, 30 Years of Groundbreaking Music

Warp, the record label which led to the blossoming of some of the most boundary-pushing artists of the electronic music scene, such as Aphex Twin, LFO, Boards of Canada, Autechre, and Squarepusher, now has their catalogue available on Qobuz. It’s the perfect opportunity to revisit the history of Britain’s best-respected independent label.
