In 1996, the film Space Jam featured cartoon character Bugs Bunny and star basketball player Michael Jordan and left its mark on a whole generation thanks to its special effects (dubious but enjoyable) and a damn fine story. But remember: the soundtrack was also a part of the legend: it included, among other things, I Believe I Can Fly by R-Kelly. Twenty-five years later, the second instalment of the franchise is based around Lebron James and, logically, on a soundtrack that brings together the highlights of contemporary American music. It's a volley of powerful hits, recorded for a young audience but done with nuance. Because alongside obvious choices like the Lil Uzi Vert, John Legend or the Jonas Brothers, there are some pleasant surprises too. In the first place, a weird track by Lil Baby and Kirk Franklin named We Win, pompous and optimistic, the perfect introduction for a cartoon of this scale. But also note appearances by soul man Leon Bridges on My Guy, and rappers from BROCKHAMPTON on MVP. In the middle of that latter track, we hear a sample from a landmark in contemporary American rap, Impeach The President, proving that this soundtrack is well-aware of its own musical foundations. The eighties rap duo Salt-N-Peppa also make an appearance, performing Hoops alongside singers Saweetie and Kash Doll, mixing both generations and genres.
