Conductor Fabio Luisi has led the Danish National Symphony Orchestra since 2017. It has been a good fit from the start, and as things really started to jell in the early 2020s, a Nielsen symphony cycle was a logical choice. This 2022 release is the second in the series, covering Nielsen's two most famous symphonies, the Symphony No. 4, Op. 29 ("inextinguishable"), and the Symphony No. 5, Op. 50. These two works are sometimes contrasted, with the Symphony No. 5 having a darker tonal palette and a grimmer feel in its great timpani duel, but they have a great deal in common, with long lines that must encompass deep contrasts. The Danish National Symphony percussionists add the requisite tension to the Symphony No. 5, but more important is Luisi's energetic sweep, his way of making even small details seem part of the overall narrative. The subtle thematic linkages in these works are clearly brought out without seeming clunky, and if there are more purely orchestrally virtuosic readings of these works, there are few that make as much musical sense. A good place to start when reacquainting oneself with Nielsen.
