On March 19, 2022, Alabaster DePlume and Jeremiah Chiu & Marta Sofia Honer inaugurated International Anthem's quarterly residency at Public Records in Brooklyn with a double bill of beautiful, communal music for a sold-out crowd. Chiu & Honer opened with an expert live performance of their synth/string duo suite Recordings from the Åland Islands. DePlume closed the affair, fronting a large ensemble of musicians that were curated for him by fellow label artist Jaimie Branch. It was DePlume's first time meeting and playing with every member of his band—which included Tcheser Holmes on drums, Hilliard Greene on bass, Leila Bordreuil on cello, Emanuel Ayvas on guitar, Chris Williams on trumpet, Tomin on bass clarinet, and Miriam Parker on dance—as they collectively interpreted works from his then recently-announced, now critically-acclaimed album GOLD. © International Anthem

Blue Note in 10 Albums

The most famous of all jazz labels had it all! Five-star artists, original repertoires, ingenious associate artistic directors, exceptional sound recording, sublime album covers, a variety of genres (Bebop, Hard Bop, Soul Jazz, Modal Jazz, Free Jazz)… The label was launched in 1939 by Francis Wolff and Alfred Lion, two Germans who had fled the Nazi regime, and had everything going for it. Qobuz has picked 10 key albums from its ample catalogue. Some of them are celebrated classics. Others are underrated marvels. But all of them played a vital role in shaping Blue Note as a label.

The Struggles of Nina Simone

Although today she is seen as one of the most original voices in jazz and soul, Nina Simone's life was anything but a smooth and gentle climb to the top. The woman who dreamed of being the first black American classical pianist had to struggle against others, against her own family, and even against herself.

The Dark Side of the Moon: An Astronomical Success

Pink Floyd's ground-breaking album The Dark Side of the Moon was the result of a long creative process that began around 1968. A Saucerful of Secrets (the main track from the eponymous album) was, for Nick Mason at least, where it all began. Their next album Ummagumma (1969) gave each band member the opportunity to create a solo piece, though they would have to combine their talents if they wanted to hit the jackpot. Pink Floyd continued to search for the perfect record with Meddle, an album which highlighted their skills in the studio, and Atom Heart Mother, before they reached nirvana with The Dark Side of the Moon. And the album’s perfection hasn’t faded one bit.
