Ravyn Lenae doesn’t just sing, her vocals often take the form of beautiful, airy whispers. After three acclaimed EPs, the young singer from Chicago has released her first album, Hypnos. It features sixteen tracks that are influenced by vocal techniques from the 2000s, but whose productions (which are mainly the work of Luke Titus, Phoelix and Steve Lacy) still contain elements of glitch beats, modern and synthetic RnB, and Afro-Caribbean grooves. Ravyn Lenae takes centre stage in this album, her melodies forming a delicate veil over the subtle arrangements. She’s delivered a deeply personal record that perfectly portrays the chaotic feelings of love and offers a deep exploration of the complexities of being human. Her songs are layered and can be read and interpreted in multiple ways, however, this in no way prevents Hypnos from being a relaxed listen. The incredible single Skin Tight, a duet with Steve Lacy, has previously enjoyed well-deserved success. The rest of the album looks like it will follow suit with great tracks like Higher, Like You Do and Lullabye. You’ll be hooked right from the first song. © Brice Miclet/Qobuz
