For this recording organist Matthew Owens presents a diverse recital of some of the greatest Christmas music ever written for the instrument. Traditional tunes, whether Lutheran chorales, plainchant, French noëls, or medieval carols, have provided the inspiration for much Christmas organ music throughout the years, with much of this programme made up of pieces based on such tunes, from J.S. Bach’s Canonic variations on "Vom Himmel hoch" to Louis-Claude Daquin’s Noël Suisse. This recital also draws on more contemporary sources and presents several world premiere recordings including Howard Skempton’s Christmas Bells and Gary Davison’s Seven Versets on Divinum Mysterium, both of which were written specially for this recording. © Resonus Classics

The Earth’s Song: The World of Gustav Mahler

What could have prompted Gustav Mahler to compose a work as unclassifiable as this one? Written between 1907 and 1908, a pivotal period in Mahler's life, The Song of the Earth occupies a special place within his oeuvre. It combines the “fin de siècle” spirit with the fascination for the exotic that was spreading amongst his peers at the time. Vienna was in turmoil when this music was composed, and the piece oscillates between the notions of farewell and new beginnings. With a lot of layers to peel back, The Song of the Earth definitely merits a closer look.

Nils Frahm, an Atypical Piano Master

Hailed by critics of classical music as well as amateurs of the electronic genre, Nils Frahm’s talent has brought harmony between the two worlds for the last ten years. Whether he plays on a church organ or a synthesiser fitted with effect pedals, the German pianist is always looking forward, and that’s what makes him so appealing.

The Paradox of Esa-Pekka Salonen’s Studio

Esa-Pekka Salonen is an acclaimed finnish conductor and prolific composer. With over 60 albums under his belt, he has heavily contributed to the history of musical interpretation. This is an interview with an exceptional musician, who discusses his unique approach to working on classical music in the studio.
