Back in 2013, Nashville singer-songwriter Caitlin Rose released her first album on Dave Matthews' ATO Records; The Stand-In was a breath of fresh air and a sign of great promise. Rose's soft twang and retro-tinged style garnered comparisons to Loretta Lynn. While she boasted an impressive pedigree—her mother, country songwriter Liz Rose, has co-written a slew of Taylor Swift tracks, including "All Too Well"—Rose was also doing her own completely unique thing. Then … she seemed to disappear. Nearly a decade later, Rose, now 35 years old, is back and sounding as great as ever. Still fully Americana, she's also freshly leaning into a greater variety of musical influences. There are shades of '80s indie pop on the bubbly and flirtatious "Modern Dancing" and psych-rock inclinations on "Gemini Moon," with its mystical-sounding steel guitar. Sun-kissed "Nobody's Sweetheart" boasts a '60s jangle and the same Byrds/Flying Burrito Brothers vibes that Susannah Hoffs has channeled in her post-Bangles solo work. You can hear that sound, too, in the cut-a-rug rocker "How Far Away." Rose's aforementioned appealing twang and sweet, Nanci Griffith-like tone pushes the Americana-rock of songs like "Getting It Right" to more of a country place that is unlike anything you hear on country radio right now. "Black Obsidian" is a wonderful surprise, dark and swooning with Roy Orbison-worthy drama and steel guitar—as well as lyrics that hint at magic and a desire to divine the unknown: "The way you stare from across the room/ You know that it could turn a person into stone/ And then I let you bring me down again/ Our love's a mirror/ Black obsidian." While that lyrical projection may sound cloudy, a bright and shiny musical life belongs to Rose if she wants it. © Shelly Ridenour/Qobuz
