El Khat is a band fronted by Eyal el Wahab, an Israeli with Yemeni origins. Well known to lovers of escapism and artificial bliss, khat is also a leafy green plant that possesses a psychotropic quality, and Yemen is the leading producer of it. Eyal el Wahab is also a carpenter, and he builds his own instruments from materials he finds on the street. On the cover of Albat Alawai Op. 99, their second album, there’s an old tin can. For El Khat, this is neither a Warholian artefact nor a piece of rubbish... It’s a musical instrument. Their music takes you on a journey through unknown territory. El Khat is inspired by traditional Yemeni music, but they put their own twist on it with their own handmade instruments and their highly psychedelic vision. Eyal el Wahab sings like an old bluesman from One Thousand and One Nights. The percussion is heavy and hypnotic, and the violins sound like brass instruments and vice versa. The backing vocals sound like they were recorded on the street, and an electric guitar will occasionally appear like a persistent backpacker that’s keen to experience a new way of life. More often than not, it’s impossible to identify the instruments. El Khat has all the power of a metal or psychedelic drone band, but without the rock instruments. The sound is raw, and the arrangements are more complex than it seems. It almost feels forbidden… created by a secret brotherhood that only exists in Eyal el Wahab’s head. El Khat is a band fronted by Eyal el Wahab, an Israeli with Yemeni origins. Well known to lovers of escapism and artificial bliss, khat is also a leafy green plant that possesses a psychotropic quality, and Yemen is the leading producer of it. Eyal el Wahab is also a carpenter, and he builds his own instruments from materials he finds on the street. On the cover of Albat Alawai Op. 99, their second album, there’s an old tin can. For El Khat, this is neither a Warholian artefact nor a piece of rubbish... It’s a musical instrument. Their music takes you on a journey through unknown territory. El Khat is inspired by traditional Yemeni music, but they put their own twist on it with their own handmade instruments and their highly psychedelic vision.
