Wie der Jazz zum Flamenco fand

Mit seiner jahrhundertealten Tradition gilt Flamenco als der Blues Spaniens. Doch erst in den 1950er-Jahren entdeckten die ersten Jazzer die Gemeinsamkeiten zu ihren eigenen Wurzeln. Grandios zum Blühen brachte die Synthese beider Genres der amerikanische Tastenstar Chick Corea, der am 9. Februar 2021 starb. Geschichte einer musikalischen Annäherung.
Auf der Jazzseite war es Chick Corea, der am tiefsten in die Flamenco-Musik eintauchte und am meisten zu diesem Genre beitrug. Ab 1972, als er mit Return to Forever sein bekanntestes Stück Spain einspielte, das längst auch im Flamenco als Standard gilt, wurden Verweise auf lateinamerikanische und spanische Musik zu einem Markenzeichen seines facettenreichen Stils. Dabei beschränkte sich sein Interesse an spanischen Klängen nicht auf die Reproduktion von Klischees, sondern auf die Entdeckung der Essenz dieser Musik. „Richtig bewusst wurde mir die Flamenco-Musik erst mit Paco de Lucía in den frühen Siebzigerjahren“, so Corea, „aber ich wusste nicht, dass es Flamenco war. Ich hörte einfach Paco und dachte: Dieser Musiker ist unglaublich, was macht er da? Ich kenne das nicht. Ich muss das lernen.“
Als erstes Ergebnis dieses Lernprozesses erschien 1976 mit der harmonisch wie rhythmisch komplexen Doppel-LP My Spanish Heart das erfolgreichste Album von Chick Corea. Von dem Pamies sagt, „dass die spanischen Elemente, die auf dieser Aufnahme entlehnt wurden, eher eine Inspiration darstellen, wie sie es für Miles Davis waren, als eine wirkliche Ambition, Flamenco in seine Musik zu integrieren“. Während der andalusische Gitarrist und Jazzforscher Juan Zagalaz befindet: „Was Corea zeigt, ist eine klare Tendenz zum Experimentieren und zur stilistischen Offenheit. Er integriert Grundelemente des Jazz mit modernen Synthesizern, Streichern und Vokalensembles sowie Latin-Klängen, die über das ferne Spanien von de Falla und Rodrigo hinausgehen, und schafft dabei eine Musik, die immer nach ihm selbst klingt.“
Acht Jahre später hat sich Coreas Gespür für die komplizierten Rhythmen und Harmonien des Flamenco deutlich erweitert. So nutzt er nun seine pianistischen Fähigkeiten, „um wie eine Gitarre zu klingen“, was sein als Beginn einer neuen Ära charakterisiertes Album Touchstone mit Paco de Lucía zeigt. „Dies stellt eine echte Begegnung von Jazz und Flamenco auf höchstem Niveau dar. Die Einbeziehung von de Lucías Gitarre in Coreas komplexes stilistisches Konzept scheint diesen Stücken eine wirklich neue Identität verliehen zu haben. Die Soli sind brillant gespielt, wobei jeder der Musiker seinen eigenen Stil und seine eigene Interpretation anbietet“, urteilt Zagalaz in seiner Analyse der Zusammenarbeit von Paco und Chick. Während Pamies Touchstone als Meisterwerk lobt, das endgültig Flamenco-Jazz als eigenständiges Genre definiere.
Corea, der 2019 auf Antidote wesentliche Tracks aus My Spanish Heart und Touchstone noch einmal neu einspielte, nahm das alles gelassen: „Der Flamenco geht in diese, der Jazz in jene Richtung, aber dann, später, treffen sie sich. Man nennt es Flamenco-Jazz, und es ist definitiv eine meiner liebsten Arten, Musik zu machen.“ Was er bis zu seinem Tod auch stets zelebrierte. Sein Flamenco-seliger Ohrwurm Spain durfte in keinem Konzert fehlen. Und es wurde zu einem beliebten Ritual, dass Corea sein Publikum zum Mitsingen animierte.
