The Netherlands Symphony Orchestra

The Netherlands Symphony Orchestra is based in the Music Center in Enschede, Netherlands. Originally founded as an amateur chamber orchestra in the 1930s, it was conducted by Klaas de Rook until 1947, when it performed under the name of the Twents Philharmonic Orchestra. By 1954, it had become the Overijssels Philharmonic Orchestra, merging in 1983 with the Opera Forum. In 1994, under the name Orchestra of the East (Orkest van het Oosten), the scaled-down ensemble became an independent organization. It was given its present name in 2011, though confusion with the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra requires that it is known as HET Symfonieorkest (literally, The Symphony Orchestra), within the Netherlands. Most of the orchestra's concerts are performed in Eschede, Hengelo, Zwolle, and Deventer. The Netherlands Symphony Orchestra is also associated with the Nederlandse Reisopera. The orchestra has been conducted by Jaap van Zweden, who served as chief conductor from 1996 to 2005, and Jan Willem de Vriend, who has been the chief conductor from 2006 to 2017. The Netherlands Symphony Orchestra records for Challenge Classics and CPO.
