Ten Tonnes

Ten Tonnes is the alias of English singer/songwriter Ethan Barnett, who emerged from the shadow of his older brother George Ezra with a string of EPs in the late 2010s. Although his music is firmly nestled in indie pop territory, singles like 2018's "G.I.V.E." also demonstrated his penchant for '50s rock & roll and garage rock. Born in Hereford in 1996, Barnett's creativity was encouraged at an early age by his parents, who were both teachers. He began playing the drums at nine but switched to guitar at 14, and later enrolled in the same drama club that his brother George and sister Jessica had attended, which cured his early shyness. Barnett went on to study music at York University, but found he had no enthusiasm for the academic focus of the course. In 2016 he self-released his debut EP, Lucy, under the moniker Ten Tonnes, and a year later made his Warner Bros debut with the Born to Lose EP. Further cultivating his sound, Barnett put out another EP, Cracks Between, in 2018, and the title track was illustrative of his knack for anchoring fuzzy indie pop with a melodic heart. He followed that EP with his self-titled debut album in 2019, which featured the aforementioned track and the lead single "G.I.V.E."
