Robert E. Person

Known for his soulful tenor voice, gospel singer Robert E. Person has distinguished himself with his fertile mix of jazz, sacred music, and R&B. He initially emerged with his 2004 debut The Call, and built a loyal following with his sophisticated live shows. Raised in Washington, D.C., Person began performing in his teens, appearing in musical theater productions with the D.C. Youth Ensemble. After high school, he furthered his studies at both Morehouse College and the University of the District of Columbia. Along the way, he embarked on a theater career, appearing in productions of The Wiz and Dreamgirls, as well as stagings of writer Langston Hughes' Black Nativity and Tambourines to Glory. He also worked as a backing vocalist with Josh Groban before launching his own career with 2004's The Call. Two years later, he followed-up with Next Level. In 2011, he issued his third full-length, Soul Sanctuary. He returned in 2015 with Love Divine, which included the single "Testify" and featured contributions by his pianist and longtime musical director Allyn Johnson, and guest vocalists Mike McCoy and Dottie Jones. The jazz-oriented Classic Covers EP arrived in 2018, and debuted at number 12 on the Billboard Top Jazz Albums chart. When not performing, Person also hosts his own radio show, The Soulful Sessions with Robert E. Person, on the Rejoice Musical Soulfood Network.
