Orchestra Della Toscana

The Orchestra della Toscana, although young by European standards, is one of Italy's top regional orchestras, with a long record of collaboration with international-caliber artists. Based in Florence, the group has a large repertory ranging from the Baroque era to contemporary works. The Orchestra della Toscana ("Orchestra of Tuscany") was founded in 1980. The impetus came from several local and regional governments in the Florence area, including the city of Florence. It is sometimes known by its Italian initials, ORT, for Orchestra Regionale Toscana. The group has 44 or 45 musicians, and it may divide into chamber groups to play music for even smaller forces. The new orchestra flourished, and by 1983, at which point composer Luciano Berio was serving as artistic director, it was recognized by the Italian Ministry of Tourism and Entertainment as an Orchestral Concert Institution. The orchestra appeared on recordings as early as 1993, when it backed violinist Ruggiero Ricci on the album Portrait of an Artist, Vol. 2. Its first appearance as a primary artist came in 1997 when it backed guitarist Edoardo Catemario on an album of concertos by Joaquín Rodrigo, Manuel Ponce, and Anton García Abril on the Arts Music label. The Orchestra della Toscana has had various conductors, including James Conlon, who was active in Italy for many years. Daniele Rustioni served as music director for much of the 2010s; he was succeeded in 2023, after several years in which there was no principal conductor, by the 26-year-old Diego Cerretta, among the youngest principal conductors ever to serve in Italy. The Orchestra della Toscana gives a regular season of concerts at Florence's Teatro Verdi. The group has also toured Italy and appeared in such leading concert halls as the Teatro alla Scala, the Lingotto Auditorium of Turin, and the Academy of Santa Cecilia in Rome. The orchestra has appeared internationally at New York's Carnegie Hall, the Teatro Coliseo in Buenos Aires, and as far afield as Hong Kong and Japan. Its collaborators are an august international group that includes cellist Yo-Yo Ma, pianist Martha Argerich, and violinists Salvatore Accardo and Rudolf Barshai. The Orchestra della Toscana has been heard on a wide variety of compilation albums featuring operatic and orchestral music. Under Rustioni, who remained active with the orchestra after stepping down, the group issued a pair of recordings on the Dynamic label in 2023, backing cellist Enrico Dindo in the Dvořák Cello Concerto in B minor and pianist Pietro de Maria in Chopin's Piano Concertos Nos. 1 and 2.
