David Rees

This ukulele-playing, Spanish-born folk-pop star of British heritage built a following of millions on video streaming services during the late 2010s. Born in Malaga in 1994, David Rees and his family soon moved north to Zafra in the province of Badajoz. He was encouraged to study music from an early age, but later chose to study psychology at university in Salamanca. It was from here that Rees started to upload online videos of popular cover versions as well as his own compositions. From summer 2017, his self-distributed early singles -- such as "La Ciudad Eterna" and "Fácil" -- started to appear on major music streaming services, but it was July's "Ella y Él" which really got him noticed. The following May, Rees issued his debut EP, Ojos, his first release for Warner Music Spain, before further 2018 singles consolidated his success. In February 2019, Rees released the single "De Ellos Aprendi," a track that went on to enjoy over 130 million streams, even before a different version of it appeared on his 2020 debut album, Amarillo. Fittingly, the promotional build-up to that full-length release -- from his summer 2019 festival appearances to the many advance singles -- was referred to by Rees as his "yellow period." The color made its way into the lyrics, onto the artwork, and into the videos for tracks such as "Corazón de Limón" and "¿Abejas?" When Amarillo finally appeared in June 2020, it expanded further on the pop production techniques that had permeated its lead singles. Rees had progressed from self-accompaniment on the ukulele to a more sophisticated presentation, while still retaining his air of simplicity and effortlessness.
