Ling Kai

Effortlessly flitting between English and Mandarin in her lyrics, Singaporean pop-rock singer Ling Kai (born October 26th, 1986) first emerged via YouTube in 2008 with the Philip Larkin tribute “Larkin Step”, which went on to amass over a million views. Signing to Australian independent record label Lempicka to release her debut EP, Honestly, she briefly toured the country’s east coast before landing a run of high-profile Asian festival appearances both as a soloist and as the frontwoman of genre-bending band Ling and the Kings. In 2012, Ling travelled to China to compete in Red Bull’s coveted Singer-Songwriter Contest, from which she emerged victorious with the single “Alone (一个人)”. Capitalising on the renewed interest in her music, she shared a debut album, LinK, in September 2013, which resulted in wins at the YinYueTai Awards and Singapore E-Awards the following year. 2014 also saw her participate in reality TV show Sing My Song (中国好歌曲). Reaching the finals under the tutelage of superstar Tanya Chua, she was subsequently invited to perform on Project SuperStar later the same year, showcasing her original song “Shuffle (随机播放)”. In the following years, Ling’s output ebbed as she prioritised recording music for local TV shows. In 2017, she unveiled a new EP, Unlearn (本能), which arrived via Cross Ratio Entertainment. She returned to the spotlight in 2020 with “Chaos (乱)” and “Late (迟)”, both of which appeared on the soundtrack for the period drama A Quest to Heal. “Chaos”, which served as the show’s main theme, later won an Asian Academy Creative Award.
