Perspectives Ensemble

New York's Perspectives Ensemble has specialized in programs and recordings that bridge the gaps between musical, visual, and literary arts. For a collegiate-associated group, the ensemble has received an unusual level of critical acclaim. Perspectives Ensemble was founded in 1993 as a resident group for Columbia University's Perspectives in Music and Art performance and exhibition series. Its original artistic director, who continues to hold the position, was Sato Moughalian. The group has generally presented thematic programs. These have included "Familiar Strangers: Gypsy Musical Heritage," "Under the Influence -- Popular Culture and the Arts in 1920s Europe," and "The Prairie and the Search for an American Style." Perspectives Ensemble has appeared at most of New York City's top venues, including Carnegie Hall, the 92nd Street Y, and Lincoln Center. The group has also served as artist-in-residence for the Foundation for Iberian Music at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, and has given world premieres of works by several Spanish composers. Among its other residences have been those with the Young People's Chorus of New York's Transient Glory commissioning program, and the Miller Theatre's Pocket Concerto Project. Perspectives Ensemble has collaborated with several major conductors including George Steel, Paul Haas, and Angel Gil-Ordóñez, who became the ensemble's principal guest conductor. The group has recorded for various labels, including Naxos, New World Records, and, in combination with other groups, Sony Classical. Its recording career began in 2001 with an album, made together with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, of Richard Danielpour's Sonnets to Orpheus. In 2019, under Gil-Ordóñez, it recorded the rarely heard original vocal version of Manuel de Falla's El amor brujo for Naxos. The group has also performed the Falla work without a conductor, earning words of praise from The New York Times for "a performance that was remarkably polished, fastidiously balanced and full of electricity."
