Pianist Rudolf Buchbinder has had a long and successful career performing monuments of Austrian music from Mozart to Brahms, but here, he turns to lighter fare. He calls his program an "impossible dream" of "a Viennese soirée where are all the composers on this recording are assembled: Strauss, Schubert, Chopin, Schumann, Liszt, and Beethoven." Never mind that Chopin doesn't quite fit with this group, for Buchbinder actually achieves something slightly different from his stated intention. Framing his program with two concert paraphrases called Soirée de Vienne ("Vienna Evening") by Alfred Grünfeld (of Johann Strauss II) and Liszt (of Schubert), he adds more keyboard versions of Strauss at each end, saying what a shame it was that this composer never wrote piano music. In the center are Schubert (all four of the Impromptus, Op. 90), Chopin, and one piece each from Beethoven and Liszt. Throughout, Buchbinder keeps things on a low burn. He doesn't emphasize the strange, misshapen quality of Beethoven's Bagatelle, Op. 33, No. 5, and one could almost dance to his Chopin waltzes. He does, in short, create a soirée atmosphere that is genuinely light, but this in no way forecloses subtlety. It would be hard to detect any signs of a slowdown in the playing of Buchbinder, 76 years old when this recording was released in 2023, and by this time, he has earned the right to release whatever kind of album he wants. Deutsche Grammophon's studio sound is exemplary, catching the sparkle in the pianist's eye.
