Pet Sounds hat zweifelsohne alles geleistet, was ein Album leisten kann...Man neigt oft dazu, sich bei der Geschichte des Pop auf die Beatles und die Rolling Stones zu beschränken und läuft dabei Gefahr, dieses Urgestein zu übersehen, das 1966 von dem ebenso brillanten wie chaotischen Leader der Beach Boys Brian Wilson geschaffen wurde und dass auf den ersten Blick ein Werk voll schöner und unbeschwerter Surfmusik sein könnte...Mit ihrem Meisterwerk Rubber Soul haben die Beatles den Pop erwachsen gemacht. Auch Wilson wollte diese Sorgenfreiheit und Unbekümmertheit des Pop in komplexere, symphonische, beinahe barocke Konstruktionen überführen. Sogar seine Prosa verabschiedet sich auf Pet Sounds von der hedonistischen Welt der "Strände", "Autos" und des "Surfens", um eine sich tiefgründigeren Themen wie dem "Menschsein" und dem "Künstler Dasein" oder sogar "Gott" zu widmen. Pet Sounds der Beach Boys bleibt trotz der ernsthaften Fassade eine aufrichtige Pop-Platte. Populärer Pop. Geniale, einfache Melodien, die einem beim ersten Hören direkt ins Ohr springen und dort bleiben. Wie bei Wouldn't It Be Nice, das das Album eröffnet. Bei dieser melodischen Einfachheit haben die Klang-Experimente von Brian Wilson keinerlei Schnickschnack oder überflüssige Spielereien nötig. Gleichzeitig zu den Sternstunden des Duos Lennon/McCartney verleiteten auch die Arbeiten des genialen Phil Spector den pausbäckigen Kalifornier dazu, sich mit Pet Sounds an innovativere Techniken zu wagen. Re-recording, außerirdische Instrumentationen, origineller Einsatz von Widerhall und Echo, komplexe Strukturen in gewissen Melodien, Instrumental-Songs - all diese Kniffe und Techniken finden Einsatz, ohne dass der verrückte Wissenschaftler dabei das Ziel für sein Manöver aus den Augen verliert: die Musik. Auf Gold Only Knows verschmelzen vokale Harmonien, präzise Arrangements, mannigfache Melodien und Himmelschöre zu einer Reinheit des Pop, der ihresgleichen sucht. Die amerikanischen Fans der ersten Stunde der Beach Boys waren vielleicht verwirrt, als Pet Sounds veröffentlicht wurde. Aber auf der anderen Seite des Ozeans wurde es mit Begeisterung empfangen. Heute, mehr als vierzig Jahre nach seiner Entstehung ist dieses Album das Paradeexemplar eines musikalischen Stils, der den Anschein eines süßen und unbeschwerten Spiels hat, letztendlich aber viel komplexer ist, als er scheint...© MZ/Qobuz

Es wurde studiert, analysiert und in seine kleinsten Einzelteile zerlegt. Pet Sounds hat zweifelsohne alles geleistet, was ein Album leisten kann...Man neigt oft dazu, sich bei der Geschichte des Pop auf die Beatles und die Rolling Stones zu beschränken und läuft dabei Gefahr, dieses Urgestein zu übersehen, das 1966 von dem ebenso brillanten wie chaotischen Leader der Beach Boys Brian Wilson geschaffen wurde und dass auf den ersten Blick ein Werk voll schöner und unbeschwerter Surfmusik sein könnte...Mit ihrem Meisterwerk Rubber Soul haben die Beatles den Pop erwachsen gemacht. Auch Wilson wollte diese Sorgenfreiheit und Unbekümmertheit des Pop in komplexere, symphonische, beinahe barocke Konstruktionen überführen. Sogar seine Prosa verabschiedet sich auf Pet Sounds von der hedonistischen Welt der "Strände", "Autos" und des "Surfens", um eine sich tiefgründigeren Themen wie dem "Menschsein" und dem "Künstler Dasein" oder sogar "Gott" zu widmen. Pet Sounds der Beach Boys bleibt trotz der ernsthaften Fassade eine aufrichtige Pop-Platte. Populärer Pop. Geniale, einfache Melodien, die einem beim ersten Hören direkt ins Ohr springen und dort bleiben. Wie bei Wouldn't It Be Nice, das das Album eröffnet. Bei dieser melodischen Einfachheit haben die Klang-Experimente von Brian Wilson keinerlei Schnickschnack oder überflüssige Spielereien nötig. Gleichzeitig zu den Sternstunden des Duos Lennon/McCartney verleiteten auch die Arbeiten des genialen Phil Spector den pausbäckigen Kalifornier dazu, sich mit Pet Sounds an innovativere Techniken zu wagen. Re-recording, außerirdische Instrumentationen, origineller Einsatz von Widerhall und Echo, komplexe Strukturen in gewissen Melodien, Instrumental-Songs - all diese Kniffe und Techniken finden Einsatz, ohne dass der verrückte Wissenschaftler dabei das Ziel für sein Manöver aus den Augen verliert: die Musik. Auf Gold Only Knows verschmelzen vokale Harmonien, präzise Arrangements, mannigfache Melodien und Himmelschöre zu einer Reinheit des Pop, der ihresgleichen sucht. Die amerikanischen Fans der ersten Stunde der Beach Boys waren vielleicht verwirrt, als Pet Sounds veröffentlicht wurde. Aber auf der anderen Seite des Ozeans wurde es mit Begeisterung empfangen. Heute, mehr als vierzig Jahre nach seiner Entstehung ist dieses Album das Paradeexemplar eines musikalischen Stils, der den Anschein eines süßen und unbeschwerten Spiels hat, letztendlich aber viel komplexer ist, als er scheint...© MZ/Qobuz

British Blues Boom: Chronik einer Revolution

Die Tatsache, dass Joe Bonamassa ein Jahr nach seinem Blue & Lonesome der Rolling Stones mit British Blues Explosion wiederkehrt, bedeutet, dass der British Blues Boom mehr als nur ein kurzlebiger Trend war… Das Interesse einer jungen Generation an den großen amerikanischen Blues-Ikonen, die in ihrem Land unbekannt waren, erschöpfte sich nicht nach einer gewissen Zeit, sondern löste eine wahre Revolution aus, bei der Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck und Jimmy Page die drei größten Agitatoren waren. Jenseits des Ärmelkanals wurden sie gar als die „Heilige Dreifaltigkeit“ der Geschichte des Rock bzw. der Gitarre gefeiert. Zwar waren sie bei weitem nicht die einzigen Musiker, die damit zu tun hatten. Doch aufgrund ihrer jeweiligen Laufbahn entdeckte man, dass der Blues nicht etwa eine Musik mit abgelaufenem Haltbarkeitsdatum war, sondern ein Tor zu anderen musikalischen Dimensionen mit neuen Wegen und Möglichkeiten.
