Rosie Carney

A soulful and confessional singer and songwriter whose music is an atmospheric blend of contemporary folk and indie pop, Rosie Carney has used both her talent and her sometimes-difficult life experiences to create a critically acclaimed body of work. Carney was born in Hampshire, England in 1997, and when she was ten years old, her family emigrated to Donegal, Ulster, Ireland. One of only two girls in her class, she was subjected to bullying by her classmates, and as a teenager she was sexually assaulted. Looking for a medium to express her feelings, Carney turned to music, writing songs that often used Donegal as a backdrop, and she became proficient on guitar and piano. At 16, Carney's music came to the attention of the A&R staff at Universal Polydor Records, which signed her to a recording contract. The label soon paired her up with noted songwriters to co-write material, including Brendan Benson, Angelo Petragalia, and members of Turin Brakes. But Carney didn't respond well to the new pressures of her career, and her record company began to lose faith in her; she was dropped before she could release any material. Undaunted, she continued writing songs and performing, and in March 2016 she was invited to perform at the South by Southwest Music Conference in Austin, Texas. Carney received positive notices for her set, and NPR chose her song "Antidote" for a playlist of their favorite discoveries from SXSW. Stevie McMin of the independent X Novo and Akira labels signed Carney to a new record deal, and she released her first single for the label, "Awake," in January 2017. Two more singles, "Your Moon" and "Winter," appeared later in the year, and "K." arrived in January 2018. As Carney's star was on the rise, she went public with her traumatic past and became an advocate for better mental health services. In 2019, she issued her debut album, Bare.
