Florent Vollant

An Innu from Maliotename, Canadian singer-songwriter Florent Vollant (born on 10 August 1959 in Labrador) is a leading voice in First Nations folk, both as one half of the duo Kashtin with Claude McKenzie and as a solo artist in his own right. From 1989 to 1995, he recorded Kashtin, Innu and Akua Tuta, three albums that earned four Félix Awards as well as 1994's Artiste pour la Paix. 1999's Nipaiamianan, an Innu-language album of Christmas songs, won the Juno Award for Aboriginal Recording of the Year in 2001. He has released a string of solo albums, including Katak in 2003 and Eku Mamu in 2009 and in 2017 was awarded Companion of the Ordre des arts et des lettres du Québec and Best Album and Best Artist for 2015 LP Puamuna at the Teweikan Gala that same year. He picked up the Prix du Jury Européen Sodec/Bourse Rideau in 2018 and the Lieutenant Governor of Quebec’s Gold Medal, also in 2018. Following the release of Mishta Meshkenu in 2018, he won the Felix Award for Indigenous Artist of the Year at the 41st Félix Awards in 2019 and served as executive producer of Call Me Human (Je m'appelle humain), Kim O'Bomsawin's documentary film about Innu poet Joséphine Bacon, in 2020. In 2021, he released the single "Boat on the River."
