Die vier Jahre nach Emeli Sandés 2012 veröffentlichten Debütalbum Our Version of Events waren turbulent: Sie heiratete ihre Jugendliebe, aber die Ehe scheiterte nach nur einem Jahr. Dann zog sie sich eine Zeitlang zurück, weil ihr der Trubel zu viel wurde. Auf ihrem Ende 2016 veröffentlichten zweiten Album Long Live the Angels verarbeitet sie diese bewegte Zeit in dem musikalischen Stil, mit dem sie bekannt wurde: Zwischen schmerzlichen Balladen und intensivem Soul-Pop taucht sie tief in ihre Gefühlswelt ein und erzählt vielfach von den Wunden einer gescheiterten Beziehung - unter anderem auf "I'd Rather Not", wo sie sich gegen eine zweite Chance ausspricht. Auch anderswo ist das Album sehr persönlich: Für den Song "Tenderly" besuchte sie ihren Vater in der sambischen Heimat und nahm dort auch einen Kinderchor auf.

Die vier Jahre nach Emeli Sandés 2012 veröffentlichten Debütalbum Our Version of Events waren turbulent: Sie heiratete ihre Jugendliebe, aber die Ehe scheiterte nach nur einem Jahr. Dann zog sie sich eine Zeitlang zurück, weil ihr der Trubel zu viel wurde. Auf ihrem Ende 2016 veröffentlichten zweiten Album Long Live the Angels verarbeitet sie diese bewegte Zeit in dem musikalischen Stil, mit dem sie bekannt wurde: Zwischen schmerzlichen Balladen und intensivem Soul-Pop taucht sie tief in ihre Gefühlswelt ein und erzählt vielfach von den Wunden einer gescheiterten Beziehung - unter anderem auf "I'd Rather Not", wo sie sich gegen eine zweite Chance ausspricht. Auch anderswo ist das Album sehr persönlich: Für den Song "Tenderly" besuchte sie ihren Vater in der sambischen Heimat und nahm dort auch einen Kinderchor auf.
