The present coupling curiously presents Schumann’s Davidsbundlertänze as a complement to Chopin’s 24 Préludes, whereas the edition published in 1970 presented the Kreisleriana. In the end, it does not matter, since the delight of finding Géza Anda, the Swiss pianist of Hungarian origin, will certainly thrill many music lovers who will happily rediscover, or discover, an immensely famous performer.

Géza Anda’s version of Chopin’s Préludes dates back to 1959 (2-8 July) and was awarded the Grand Prix de l'Académie Charles Cros a little later, at a time when this prize was somewhat the equivalent for music of what the Prix Goncourt is for literature, in France. Just over six years later, Anda recorded a selection of Schumann works, including these “Danses des compagnons de David” (9-14 May 1966) in which he eloquently highlights the famous manic-depressive split personality that the composer poetically expressed through his two avatars Eusebius and Florestan.

The name Géza Anda has long been associated with the first complete cycle of Mozart’s Piano Concertos, which he conducted from the piano at the head of the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg for Deutsche Grammophon, but also with his recordings dedicated to Bartók, Brahms and Schumann. Affectionately nicknamed “the troubadour of the piano” by Wilhelm Furtwängler, he moved to Switzerland in 1943 where he gave masterclasses in Lucerne, succeeding Edwin Fischer. You may be surprised today by this slightly dry piano which is devoid of the romance you love seeing from pianists like Claudio Arrau or Nelson Freire.
