Über das Album

Er ist der größte Dandy. Dem Sänger können all die Jahre nichts anhaben. Und er macht auch nur das, was ihm gefällt. Wenn etwa der ehemalige Boss der übermütigen, dekadenten Glam-Rock-Band Roxy Music uns daran erinnert, welch große Leidenschaft ihn mit dem Jazz verbindet. Genauer gesagt mit jenem der zwanziger und dreißiger Jahre… Im Jahre 1977 präsentierte er mit seinem ersten Soloalbum These Foolish Things, und dann 1999 mit dem magischen, schon ganz hübsch aus den Jahren gekommenen As Time Goes By und drei Jahre später mit The Jazz Age seine eigene raffinierte, instrumentale und gesungene Version, für die er Klänge aus dem dahingeschiedenen Cotton Club, diesem legendären Tanzklub in Harlem in der Zeit der Prohibition, mit Hymnen aus den Goldenen Zwanziger Jahren mischte. Dank seiner samtweichen, ganz leicht gebrochenen Stimme erweckt Ferry, dieser Dandy, einen sepiagetönten Jazz mit einzigartiger und zeitloser Eleganz zu neuem Leben. Bitter-Sweet ist eine gesungene oder instrumentale Zeitreise, sodass man sich in eine fast vergessene, abwechselnd von Swing und Melancholie getragene Atmosphäre versetzt fühlt. Ausgangspunkt ist in diesem Fall die deutsche Fernsehserie Babylon Berlin, der in den zwanziger Jahren angesiedelte Krimis von Volker Kutscher als Vorlage dienten. Es ist der ideale Rahmen für eine Kombination aus Jazz, Ragtime und Blues, um die früheren Songs aus seinen eigenen Soloalben oder den Alben von Roxy Music neu zu interpretieren (While My Heart is Still Beating und Dance Away). Das ehemalige Roxy-Mitglied scharte die musikalischen Experten seines Bryan Ferry Orchestras um sich und präsentiert sich als eleganter, erstklassiger Master of Ceremonies.
