Cuando Booker T. Jones produjo su primer álbum, “Just as I am”, en 1971, describió a Bill Withers como “el poeta que Stax nunca tuvo...” y Rolling Stone lo llamó una vez “el Bruce Springsteen afroamericano”. Bill Withers es uno de los artistas más destacados de la música soul, que aportó su propio toque al género a través de su especial arte narrativo. Con sus canciones ganadoras de premios Grammy “Ain’t No Sunshine” (1971), “Lean on Me” (1972), “Just the Two of Us” (1980, en el álbum de Grover Washington Jr.) o “Grandma’s Hands” (1971), “Use Me” (1972) y “Lovely Day” (1977), se ha abierto camino en los corazones de todos los amantes de la música.

Empezó a escribir canciones a los veinte años, después de haber servido en Oriente Medio durante mucho tiempo (la canción “I can’t write left-handed” elevó sus letras a un nivel político), y alcanzó un gran éxito con su primer álbum.
