Vandenberg

Vandenberg is a Dutch-American, pop-leaning hard rock outfit led by virtuosic guitarist and namesake Adrian Vandenberg. Between 1982 and 1985, the band issued three studio albums, the first two of which (1983's Vandenberg and 1983's Heading for a Storm) cracked the Billboard 200. The group ceased operations in 1987 after Vandenberg joined Whitesnake. He re-formed the project in 2020 with a new lineup and released the aptly named 2020, with Sin appearing in 2023. Founded by the Netherlands-born six-string specialist after the collapse of his previous band, Teaser, Vandenberg's first incarnation featured Bert Heerink (vocals), Dick Kemper (bass), and Jos Zoomer (drums). The group inked a deal with Atlantic on the strength of an impressive demo, enabling Vandenberg to give up the heavy session work and super-realist art that had been financially supporting him. Recorded in England at Jimmy Page's Sol Studios, the band's eponymous debut enjoyed considerable success in the U.S. after the single "Burning Heart" peaked at number 39 on the Billboard 100. The largely self-produced effort had a heavy melodic sound reminiscent of the Scorpions and contained sparkling performances from Vandenberg. The former’s songwriting and guitar playing interested David Coverdale, who twice asked the guitarist to join Whitesnake. 1983's expertly crafted Heading for a Storm benefited from the band’s broader experience but was not as successful as their debut. 1985's Alibi saw the crew deliver a solid set of radio-ready hard rock with better production and more fiery fretwork from Vandenberg. However, the departure of Heerink the following year signaled a downward slide for the band, which dissolved in 1987 when Vandenberg finally accepted an offer from the persistent Coverdale to join the ascending Whitesnake. In 2020, Adrian Vandenberg announced that he was leading a re-tooled version of the group featuring ex-Rainbow vocalist Ronnie Romero, bassist Randy Van Der Elsen (Tank), and drummer Koen Herfst (Epica). Released later that year, 2020 included a new rendering of "Burning Heart" and featured guest spots from Whitesnake alums Rudy Sarzo (bass) and Brian Tichy (drums). The group worked with producer Bob Marlette (Ozzy Osbourne, Alice Cooper) on album number five. Released in 2023, Sin was issued through Mascot Label Group and marked the studio debut of new vocalist Mats Levén.
