U96

German techno outfit U96 produce ecstatic rave and Eurodance anthems as well as more exploratory material drawing from ambient, trance, and electro. The group's debut single, a dance remake of Klaus Doldinger's theme to the classic 1981 war film Das Boot, topped the German charts for 13 weeks in 1992. The full-length Das Boot arrived the same year, and the group remained a fixture of the European charts throughout the decade, as they released faster, more vocal-heavy material on subsequent albums like Club Bizarre (1995) and Heaven (1996). The group upgraded their sound with later, more experimental releases like 2018's Reboot. Transhuman, a full-length collaboration with former Kraftwerk member Wolfgang Flür, landed in 2020, and the group continued the nautical theme of their debut with 20.000 Meilen Unter dem Meer (2022). In another nod to the past, U96 released a cover of Wang Chung's "Dance Hall Days" in 2023. U96 was formed in Hamburg in 1990, and included Hayo Lewerentz, Ingo Hauss, and Helmut Hoinkis (all of whom were in synth pop group Boytronic at the time), as well as DJ Alex Christensen. Skadi Lange (aka Miss Melody) also contributed vocals to the group's early albums, along with Hauss. The project was named after the World War II-era German submarine U-96, made famous by its fictionalized portrayal in former war correspondent Lothar-Günther Buchheim's 1973 novel Das Boot, and its highly successful 1981 film adaptation directed by Wolfgang Petersen. The debut U96 single, "Das Boot," was a dance remake of the movie's theme music, composed by saxophonist Klaus Doldinger of jazz fusion ensemble Passport, set to a stomping rave beat and interjected with computerized vocal commands. Released in late 1991, the song topped the German singles chart for 13 weeks the following year, additionally reaching the Top 20 in several other European countries. A video was produced using footage from the film, and the full-length Das Boot included additional hits such as "I Wanna Be a Kennedy." Replugged, the band's second album, quickly followed in 1993, led by the uplifting single "Love Sees No Colour." Other tracks ranged from breakbeat-heavy experimentation to downtempo moments. Non-album single "Inside Your Dreams" appeared in 1994, signaling U96's evolution from rave to trance-influenced Eurodance. "Love Religion," a Top Five hit in Germany, had a much faster tempo than their earlier tracks, and parent album Club Bizarre followed in 1995, blending acid trance with dance-pop. The album included "Boot II," an updated version of their debut hit. "Heaven," with anthemic vocals by Dea-Li incorporating the melody of Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time," appeared in 1996 and was another German Top Five success. Dea-Li sang several other songs on the full-length Heaven, one of U96's most pop-informed albums. "Seven Wonders," featuring both choral and diva vocals, appeared in 1997, while 1998 single "Energie" fused trance with electro, and "Beweg Dich, Baby" included a rap breakdown. Best of 1991–2001 was issued in 2000, including "Das Boot 2001" (a more vocal-driven, faster remake of the breakthrough hit) and tracks recorded for the unreleased album Rhythm of Life. While less active during the 2000s, the group released "We Call It Love" in 2003, and two charting singles, "Mr. DJ Put on the Red Light" and "Vorbei," in 2006. Both appeared on fifth full-length Out of Wilhelmsburg, which was issued in 2007. U96's lineup constantly shifted, and longtime member Alex Christensen (also known for producing ATC's 2000 hit "Around the World [La La La La La]" and solo hits as Alex C.) left the group in 2014. The Dark Matter EP appeared in late 2015, blending synth pop with modern EDM influences. Produced by the core duo of Ingo Hauss and Hayo Lewerentz, Reboot arrived in 2018, owing much more to electro and synth pop than commercial Eurodance. The album included songs featuring former Kraftwerk electronic percussionist Wolfgang Flür and German new wave star Joachim Witt. U96 expanded their collaboration with Flür into the 2020 full-length Transhuman. The album included two mixes of the group's then-current single without Flür, "Let Yourself Go," as bonus tracks. Former U96 member Helmut Hoinkis died on February 19, 2021. Following additional updates of perennial favorite "Das Boot," U96 released the cinematic, nautical-themed 20.000 Meilen Unter dem Meer in 2022. The album featured appearances by actor Claude-Oliver Rudolph on several tracks, including a cover of Donovan's "Atlantis." U96's remake of "Dance Hall Days" by Wang Chung was issued in 2023.
