Sally Seltmann

A highly respected figure in Australian indie pop, Sally Seltmann first made her name in the 2000s under the New Buffalo moniker. As a songwriter, she found international success co-writing Feist's 2007 hit "1 2 3 4," while delivering highly regarded solo albums like 2010's Heart That's Pounding and 2014's Hey Daydreamer for the Arts & Crafts label. Seltmann is also a member of the acclaimed Australian trio Seeker Lover Keeper, as well as a producer and novelist. Her third solo album, Early Moon, was released in 2022. Seltmann has been a part of Australia's independent music scene since the early '90s, when she played with the Sydney-based indie rock group Lustre 4 under her maiden name, Sally Russell. After a move to Melbourne, she tweaked her sound to include beats and keyboards and performed under the name New Buffalo, releasing EPs like 2001's About Last Night and 2005's self-titled remix collection, and albums including 2004's The Last Beautiful Day and 2007's Somewhere, Anywhere. Her profile was raised significantly when "1 2 3 4," a song she'd co-written with Canadian artist Feist, became a breakout hit thanks in part to its use in a highly visible Apple iPod commercial. A consummate singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist with a knack for vintage pop arrangements, her work as New Buffalo netted her nominations for both the Australian Music Prize and the ARIA Awards. When she married the Avalanches' Darren Seltmann, she took his name professionally, and released 2010's Heart That's Pounding as Sally Seltmann. The following year, she launched a new venture, Seeker Lover Keeper, with fellow singer/songwriters Sarah Blasko and Holly Throsby. Something of an Australian indie supergroup, their eponymous 2011 debut became a breakout success, reaching number three on the ARIA charts on its way to platinum status. Seltmann returned to solo work with 2014's winsome Hey Daydreamer, and won a 2016 ARIA Award for "Dancing in the Darkness," a song she co-wrote with her husband Darren Seltmann for the ABC series The Letdown. Also an author, she published her debut novel, Lovesome, in 2018, and then reunited with Seeker Lover Keeper for the group's 2019 album Wild Seeds. Early Moon, Seltmann's third album under her own name, was released in 2022.
