Royal Wood

Taking influence from traditional pop, Toronto-based songwriter Royal Wood's stylized adult alternative music has drawn comparisons to songwriters including countrymen Ron Sexsmith and Rufus Wainwright. After making his recording debut with The Milkweed EP in 2002, he was nominated for a Juno Award for Songwriter of the Year for his third full-length, 2010's The Waiting. He has charted in Canada with releases including 2012's We Were Born to Glory and 2016's Ghost Light. John Royal Wood Nicholson grew up in Lakefield, Ontario in a family that was supportive of his interest in music. His brother, Luke Nicholson, is also a solo recording artist. John started playing piano by ear as a preschooler before beginning formal lessons a few years later. By his teens he was playing other instruments as well, including guitar, drums, and trumpet. His main instrument remained piano, however, and he played jazz in clubs around Montreal while attending McGill University, where he studied business. Performing under his middle names, as Royal Wood he released his first EP, The Milkweed EP, via Sherpa Records in 2002. His full-length debut, Tall Tales, followed on the same label in 2004. He moved to Six Shooter Records for 2007's A Good Enough Day, and Dead Daisy Records issued his EP The Lost and Found in 2009. His third album, 2010's The Waiting (MapleMusic Recordings), led to a nomination for Songwriter of the Year at the Juno Awards in 2011. Royal Wood landed on Canada's album chart for the first time with 2012's We Were Born to Glory, reaching as high as number 23. It was also nominated for a Juno in the Adult Alternative category. MapleMusic/Fontana North also handled his next album, 2014's The Burning Bright. Later the same year, he self-released his sixth LP, I Wish You Well. Royal Wood returned to album charts in Canada with 2016's Ghost Light, peaking at number 66. The release earned him a guest spot on Bonnie Raitt's Canadian tour in 2017. After signing with Toronto-based Outside Music, Royal Wood released the full-length Ever After the Farewell in April 2018, following it with the Love Will Linger EP that October.
