Pyramaze

Pyramaze is a Danish progressive/symphonic power metal outfit that combines cinematic sonic vistas with driving riffs and fist-pumping earworm melodies. Emerging in the early 2000s, the band made a name for themselves with detailed, narrative-driven releases like Legend of the Bone Carver (2006) and Immortal (2008) before going on hiatus in 2011. After undergoing a series of personnel changes, Pyramaze returned with Disciples of the Sun (2015) and continued to ply their progressive melodic metal wares into the next decade on well-received efforts like Epitaph (2020) and Bloodlines (2023). Founded in 2002 by guitarist Michael Kammeyer, the band eventually grew into a quintet with the additions of drummer Morten Gade Sørensen (Wuthering Heights, Anubis Gate), bassist Niels Kvist, keyboardist Jonah Weingarten, and vocalist Lance King (Balance of Power). The group's debut album, Melancholy Beast, was released in 2004 on Nightmare Records. Guitarist Toke Skjønnemand joined the group shortly thereafter, and made his first studio appearance on the 2006 concept LP Legend of the Bone Carver. Vocalist Lance King left the group the following year, and was replaced by Iced Earth's Matt Barlow, who appeared on the band's 2008 outing, Immortal. However, it would be Barlow's sole contribution to Pyramaze, as he rejoined Iced Earth shortly after the album's release. The group experienced their biggest shake-up yet in 2011, with founder Kammeyer and bassist Kvist announcing their departures, but keyboardist Weingarten and drummer Sørensen vowed to keep going, enlisting longtime producer Jacob Hansen to take over guitar duties, and bringing in new vocalist Terje Haroy. Disciples of the Sun, Pyramaze's first outing with the new crew, arrived in 2015 on Inner Wound Recordings. Two years later, the band issued their fifth studio long-player, the post-apocalyptic concept album Contingent. Pyramaze inked a deal with AFM Records ahead of the release of 2020's Epitaph, which featured guest appearances by Brittney Slayes (Unleash the Archers) and ex-Pyramaze vocalists Matt Barlow and Lance King. 2023's Bloodlines saw the group deliver a potent blend of symphonic opulence and riff-forward power metal with help from special guests Melissa Bonny (vocalist for Ad Infinitum) and guitarists Andrew Kingsley (Unleash the Archers) and Tim Hansen, the son of Helloween and Gamma Ray virtuoso Kai Hansen.
