Monty Luke

Monty Luke produces and spins a wide array of deep, dubby house, techno, and disco. Originally from Los Angeles, he's spent time in many other cities, including a decade-long stay in Detroit, where he established his Black Catalogue label and worked for Planet E as a manager and recording artist. After moving to Berlin, he released his debut album, Hard Work Not Hype, in 2019. Nightdubbing, an LP heavily nodding to Caribbean influences, appeared in 2024. Luke was born in Los Angeles, where he got into club culture and began to DJ. During the 1990s, he released a few mixtapes and moved to San Francisco. He co-produced the 2002 deep house single "What U Feel" as Loopwreckas (with Sam Urton), and the minimal techno record "Paranoid" with Tasho Nicolopulos in 2007. Luke moved to Detroit and became affiliated with Planet E, where he became label manager. His single "Art, Love & War," featuring a remix by label founder Carl Craig, appeared in 2009. The EP Futures Unfolding was digitally issued by the label in 2011, and Luke launched Black Catalogue with Tomorrow EP. Several more EPs followed, as well as a 12" with Mike Simonetti (as Billions & Billions) and collaborations with tech-house duo Catz 'n Dogz. Luke's 2013 single "Lonely Is the Night" was remixed by deep house godfather Mr. Fingers. Luke released a handful of singles as Mandingo, and issued Rude Photo in 2016, before he relocated to Berlin. Hard Work Not Hype, Luke's debut album, arrived on Black Catalogue in 2019, later followed by the extended digital release More Work. He also collaborated with dub techno producer Brendon Moeller as Zodiac, issuing the album Serengeti by Night on Hypercolour. Luke released the EP Vibe the Feel in 2021. Exploring dub and ambient textures as well as dembow rhythms, the album Nightdubbing arrived on Rekids in 2024.
