Meemo Comma

The solo project of British electronic musician Lara Rix-Martin, Meemo Comma produces ambient and experimental music that draws from several themes, techniques, and concepts, from nature and meditation to science fiction and religion. Previously active as part of the duo Heterotic, with partner Mike Paradinas (aka µ-Ziq), Rix-Martin founded Objects Limited, a label focusing on female-identifying and non-binary electronic musicians, in 2016. Their releases as Meemo Comma include 2019's Sleepmoss, an ambient work inspired by the British woodlands, and 2021's Neon Genesis: Soul Into Matter², an ambitious full-length that draws connections between Jewish mysticism and '90s anime, while nodding to jungle and rave culture. 2023's Loverboy leaned further into deconstructed jungle and breakbeat hardcore. The Brighton-born artist began releasing music as half of Heterotic, a duo with partner Mike Paradinas, founder of the renowned Planet Mu label. 2013's Love & Devotion (including several collaborations with Gravenhurst) and 2014's Weird Drift (featuring guest artist Vezelay) were both moody sets of left-field synth pop tunes evoking influences from Fleetwood Mac to acid house. Rix-Martin established Objects Limited in 2016, and one of its first releases was Cyclizine, an EP they recorded as Lux E Tenebris. Recorded while pregnant with their second child, the EP was named after a pill used to treat extreme morning sickness. Ghost on the Stairs, Rix-Martin's first album as Meemo Comma, appeared in 2017, interpreting how having Auditory Processing Disorder effects how they perceive sounds. Sleepmoss, an ambient release about inner reflection, the environment, and finding peace with mental health, was released by Planet Mu in 2019. The self-explanatory Guided Meditation was digitally issued in 2020. Meemo Comma's third album, Neon Genesis: Soul Into Matter², appeared in 2021. The release drew from Kabbalistic text and Hebrew prayers as well the concepts and soundtracks of anime series and films such as Neon Genesis Evangelion and Ghost in the Shell. The more breakbeat-heavy, rave-influenced Loverboy arrived in 2023.
