Lauren Flax

Lauren Flax is a Detroit-born, Brooklyn-based DJ and producer whose solo work ranges from energetic, hedonistic house tracks to more introspective songwriting. Spinning various dance styles since the late '90s, she's collaborated with artists such as Sia, Little Boots, Tricky, and Nina Sky, both as a solo artist and as half of the trip-hop duo CREEP. She began releasing vintage-sounding acid house records in the late 2010s, and shifted to a more ethereal sound with 2021's Out of Reality EP. She teamed up with Pale Blue's Liz Wight on 2023's Liz & Lauren, an EP of trancey, breakbeat-driven house songs. Flax started playing drums as a child, later learning guitar and bass in high school. She began to DJ at raves and clubs around Detroit, initially spinning jungle before moving to house, techno, and electro. She was a weekly resident at the Motor Lounge, along with other DJs of future renown like Mike Servito and Derek Plaslaiko. Flax moved to Chicago in 1999, and played at the first Detroit Electronic Music Festival in 2000. She relocated to Brooklyn in 2002, and a contribution to Le Tigre's Remix EP was her first released production. Flax collaborated with drum'n'bass producer Submerged on a live track issued on 2004's Obliterati EP 2. Flax's career began to take off during the late 2000s. She was Fischerspooner's tour DJ between 2008 and 2011, and her first single as a solo artist, 2009's "You've Changed," featured Sia, who subsequently re-recorded the song for her next album. Flax collaborated with fellow Detroit expat MK and vocalist Carrie Wilds on the 2010 single "Stronger Now." Along with Lauren Dillard, Flax formed the trip-hop-influenced duo CREEP, who released singles featuring Romy Madley Croft of the xx, Nina Sky, Holly Miranda, and others. The pair's 2013 full-length debut, Echoes, included appearances by Sia, Tricky, Lou Rhodes of Lamb, and more. CREEP remixed songs by artists such as She Wants Revenge, Poly Styrene, and School of Seven Bells. Soon after the album's release, Flax concentrated on her solo career. She collaborated with Kim Ann Foxman (ex-Hercules & Love Affair) for 2014's "Pleasure Principle," and Jo Lampert on 2015's "In the Night." Additionally, she remixed artists including Peaches, Oh Land, and even They Might Be Giants' cover of Jonathan Richman's "I Was Dancing in the Lesbian Bar." Flax's 2016 EP U Know (featuring Josh Caffe and Mister Wallace) appeared on legendary New York house label Nervous Records. She was featured on Little Boots' 2018 single "Picture," and she additionally collaborated with Chicago's DJ Heather on the single "The Acid." Mutual friend Jimmy Edgar introduced Flax to DJ Haus, who released her EP Dance Trax, Vol. 16 on Unknown to the Unknown. 2019's One Man's House Is Another Woman's Techno was issued by The Bunker New York, a Brooklyn-based collective featuring some of Flax's associates from her early days in the Detroit club scene. In 2020, Flax remixed "Breathe" by Mike Simonetti's Pale Blue project, shifting from acid house into a more atmospheric sound with ethereal vocals. She continued exploring this style with her EP Out of Reality, released by 2MR in 2021. She also issued Endless Summer (with Posthuman) and the two-track You Can Take the Bitch Outta Detroit. In 2022, Flax released The Sweat EP on Super Rhythm Trax, appeared on the Lazy Ants X Friends EP by Italian producer Lazy Ants, and collaborated with Chrissy on the song "Come to Me." Flax was named Underground Hero of 2022 by DJ Mag's Best of North America awards. "Dada Entry," a single with Jason Burns and Peter Sheppard, appeared in 2023. Flax and Pale Blue's Liz Wight released the breaky, vocal-heavy EP Liz & Lauren in September.
