kyd the band

The bright, yearning pop music and personal lyrics of Kyd the Band are the creation of singer, songwriter, and producer Devin Guisande, formerly of sibling duo Kyle & Devin. After debuting the project with his brother in 2015, he took Kyd the Band solo in late 2017. Following a few singles, he reached a wider audience in 2019, the year he scored the streaming hit "Easy," a collaboration with Elley Duhé featured on his second EP, Character Development (Season 2). Devin has followed his breakthrough solo single with the third and fourth EPs in his "seasons" series and ruminative 2022-2023 singles such as "My Own Worst Enemy," "Same," and "Dark Place." The sons of a preacher and a singer, Kyle and Devin Guisande grew up performing together in church. Devin started on drums at age ten, later learning to play piano and guitar. When he was 16, he and his brother formed a duo, as Devin began writing his own songs. He moved to Los Angeles three years later but was quickly disillusioned by meetings with industry heavyweights, and in 2013, he decided to try his luck in Nashville. Kyle joined his brother in Tennessee about a year later. The siblings first established a national following with a video channel that specialized in covers and mashups, which led to invitations to work with other musicians. One such joint project was a video cover of Nick Jonas' "Jealous" with Kurt Schneider that drew hundreds of thousands of views within days of being uploaded in January 2015. After heading to the studio with original material, they released their debut single as Kyle & Devin, "Compass," later that year. A pop tune that opened with ukulele and horns, it was written and produced by the brothers and mixed by Justin Hergett (Nick Jonas, Alicia Keys). They were featured on the REEZ single "Night Won't Fall" in mid-2016, around the time the Guisandes signed a publishing deal with Round Hill Music and Jimmy Robbins Music, and rebranded as Kyd the Band. DJ/producer Avedon took note of the project and brought in the siblings as songwriters for Bone Thugs-N-Harmony's 2017 album New Waves. That led to a management deal for Kyd the Band as well as their first tour. Kyle left the group in late 2017, and Devin took over the moniker, signing with European divisions of Sony. A series of track releases followed, including 2018's "Francis St." and 2019's "Easy" with Elley Duhé, the latter of which garnered millions of streams and, following Season 1: The Intro (issued the same year), was included on Character Development (Season 2), his first of two EPs released in 2020. His second 2020 EP, Season 3: The Realization, fared well due to "I'll Stay," another song that quickly achieved seven-digit streaming figures. Season 4: Series Finale closed out Devin's conceptual EPs in 2021 with help from Taela on the duet "Real Problems." Devin was behind numerous singles over the next couple years. A cover of Lit's "My Own Worst Enemy" matched him with producer the Gifted and singer Amber Liu, and was trailed by "Same," "Sorry," and "Dark Place," among other loose tracks.
