Kacey Johansing

Idioma disponible: inglés
Singer/songwriter Kacey Johansing puts a graceful, sophisticated spin on bittersweet '70s West Coast influences. After emerging in 2010 with her solo debut, Many Seasons, and winning fans among the indie music community, her fourth full-length, 2020's No Better Time, found her collaborating with the likes of Rob Schnapf (Beck, Elliott Smith) and members of Julian Casablancas & the Voidz and Tall Tales & the Silver Lining. The lusher, partly Bacharach-inspired Baroque pop of 2023's Year Away was bolstered by such guests as Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith and Hand Habits' Meg Duffy. Born in Kalamazoo, Michigan and raised in Colorado, where she played in bands throughout high school, Johansing later attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston for a couple years before settling down in the California Bay area. She immersed herself in the music, film, and art scenes there, and participated in open-mike nights. Eventually collaborating with Geographer, she also contributed to albums by tUnE-yArDs, Mirah, and Thao Nguyen, among others. In the meantime, she released her first album, Many Seasons, in 2010. Co-produced by Johansing, Jeremy Harris, and Robert Shelton, the darker Grand Ghosts followed in 2013. Johansing then focused on the short-lived Yesway, a singer/songwriter duo she formed with Emily Ritz. They released a self-titled album in 2014 before parting ways. A label she co-founded with Real Estate’s Alex Bleeker and songwriter Jeff Manson, Night Bloom Records issued her third full-length 2017's The Hiding, which she'd completed in Los Angeles after moving downstate. Johansing produced her next album with help from Tim Ramsey (Vetiver, Fruit Bats). Released on Night Bloom in 2020, the Rob Schnapf-mixed No Better Time featured appearances by Trevor Beld-Jimenez (Tall Tales & the Silver Lining), Amir Yaghmai (Julian Casablancas & the Voidz), and longtime Devendra Banhart bassist Todd Dahlhoff. Johansing booked time at studios including 64 Sound Studio in Highland Park and Sunset Sound in L.A. proper for her next album, which she conceived and recorded with Tyler Karmen (DIIV, Alvvays). A lusher outing with Baroque flourishes of horns, woodwinds, and strings, 2023's Year Away was again mixed by Schnapf. Featuring guest spots by Hand Habits’ Meg Duffy (guitar), electronic artist Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith (vocals), the Voidz's Amir Yaghmai (violin), and others alongside the rhythm section of Todd Dahlhoff (Feist, Devendra Banhart) and Josh Adams (Jenny Lewis, Devendra Banhart), it arrived on Night Bloom in July of 2023.
