La más exitosa intérprete folk de los 60, Joan Baez dispone de una voz de soprano única que, desde finales de los 50, ha puesto al servicio de la música folk y pop así como de varias causas políticas. Baez obtuvo reconocimiento por primera vez en el Folk Festival de Newport, en 1959, cuando su entonces álbum debut, Joan Baez (octubre de 1960), para Vanguard Records. De 1962 a 1964, fue el rostro popular de la música folk, en cabeza de cartel de festivales y giras y cantando en eventos políticos, incluyendo la Marcha sobre Washington en 1963.
