Jacob Greenberg

An important force in contemporary music, Jacob Greenberg is active as a pianist, composer, educator, producer, vocal coach, and podcaster. He is a longtime member of the International Contemporary Ensemble. Greenberg was born around 1975 and grew up in Lawrenceville, New Jersey. He graduated from Oberlin College with a dual major in music and religion and then went on for master's and doctoral degrees at Northwestern University, studying there with Ursula Oppens. Purely as a pianist, his career has been impressively versatile; he has performed as a solo recitalist, an orchestral soloist, a chamber music player, and a vocal accompanist. Greenberg has appeared with the New York Philharmonic and the Israel Philharmonic, and he has appeared as part of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra's MusicNOW series with members of that orchestra and with the ensemble Contempo at the University of Chicago. In 2009, Greenberg made his recording debut as an accompanist, backing baritone Alexander Hurd on the album Shadow of the Blues on the Centaur label. His solo album debut, Solitary, appeared on the New Focus label the following year. Greenberg has frequently toured with soprano Tony Arnold; the pair recorded Olivier Messiaen's Harawi for the New Focus label in 2013. Greenberg's most durable association is with the International Contemporary Ensemble, with which he has performed across the Western hemisphere and Europe. He heads the ensemble's in-house Tundra label. Greenberg's commitment to contemporary music extends beyond performance to his several solo recordings on New Focus, for which he has often commissioned new works; to the concert series, Music in Close Range, which mixes contemporary and traditional repertory; and to his program The Listening Room, which introduces school students to experimental composition. A composer himself, Greenberg writes music that includes spoken and sung texts, and he maintains a podcast, Intégrales, which explores interactions of music and daily city life. He is also in demand as a vocal coach for contemporary opera. He has taught at Hunter College, City University of New York, the Juilliard School, and the State University of New York at Buffalo and is currently on the faculty at the Tanglewood Music Center. In 2021, his recording Bright Codes was released on Tundra.
