Field School

The solo project of Math and Physics Club's Charles Bert, Field School approaches its earnest, jangly indie pop with slightly warmer hues and nods to both happiness and loss. Playing all the instruments himself, Bert made his full-length Field School debut with When Summer Comes in 2022. Charles Bert released four albums as singer and rhythm guitarist of Seattle's Math and Physics Club from the mid-2000s up to and including early 2018's Lived Here Before. The band's co-founder and lead guitarist, James Werle, died of cancer later that year, and when the COVID-19 pandemic forced musicians off the road and into isolation in early 2020, Bert began working on songs alone. Residing in Olympia, Washington and taking inspiration from the sound and D.I.Y. ethos of local indie pop juggernaut K Records as well as England's Sarah Records, he set about writing, arranging, performing, and recording songs on his own, often learning on the fly. His friend, artist Jimmy Ulvenes, started the cassette label Small Craft Advisory in order to issue the project's first songs in the form of a trio of limited-edition EPs: It's Only Everything, Hey Satellite, and Swainson's Thrush, in January, April, and August of 2022, respectively. Some of those songs reappeared on Field School's full-length debut, When Summer Comes, released on Bobo Integral that November.
