Earth, Wind & Fire fue una de las bandas de funk más consumadas musicalmente, aclamadas por la crítica y comercialmente populares de los 70. Su abarcadora visión musical usaba el funk como fundamento, pero también incorporaba jazz, smooth soul, gospel, pop, rock & roll, psicodelia, blues, folk, música africana y más adelante, disco. El cantante líder Philip Bailey le dio a EWF una dimensión adicional con su talento para las baladas sentimentales además de las sesiones de funk; detrás de él, la banda hacía armonías como un grupo suave de Motown, trabajaba un groove ebulliente como The J.B.'s o improvisaba como un grupo de jazz fusión.
