Bow Anderson

A thread of pure pop runs through the music of bombastic Scottish singer/songwriter Bow Anderson, differentiating her from a number of other artists that have gone the retro soul path. Born in the late '90s, she grew up on the east side of Edinburgh, near Portobello Beach, throwing herself into physical activities such as dance, swimming, and gymnastics. At the age of ten, she started entering trampolining competitions at the city's Meadowbank Stadium and came close to being called up to Team GB. However, three years later, a serious injury ended her career, at which point she decided to focus on the performing arts. A diagnosis of dyslexia at age 15 led her further away from traditional academia and she began entering local singing contests. Four years on, Anderson enrolled at the BIMM Institute in London in a concerted effort to pursue a career in music. Beyonce and Jennifer Hudson provided early inspirations, particularly their performances in Bill Condon's 2006 film, Dreamgirls. From there she explored the works of classic soul artists such as Etta James and Otis Redding. BIMM provided an extensive introduction to the workings of the modern music industry, as well as key contacts which ultimately led to interest from Universal Music executives. By early 2020, she had signed to Island in the U.K. and within months had a deal with EMI for the rest of the world. Her debut single -- March 2020's self-penned tale of heartbreak, "Sweater" -- was co-produced by Jamie Scott and Jonny Coffer, and within six months it had been streamed 5.5 million times. Scott became a continual collaborator and Anderson released a steady stream of singles -- including "Heavy" and "Island" -- as the year progressed. Bucking the trend of those elaborately arranged tracks, she issued a pensive piano-led version of Tears for Fears' "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" in November. She closed out the year with a guest appearance on Felix Jaehn & Cheat Codes' "I Just Wanna," revealing a club-focused string to her bow. The new year brought her New Wave EP, featuring two new tracks, alongside each of her solo singles to date.
