After moving to London for school, he began working on his music in earnest, uploading tracks that caught the ear of Tri Angle Records, who signed him in March 2014. That June, the song "NYC" offered a glimpse of Boothroyd's challenging, percussion-heavy Idle Hours EP. Made and mixed with cheap equipment for a purposefully distorted sound like a poorly compressed YouTube video, the EP arrived in September 2014.
