A Tribe Called Quest
El grupo de rap más inteligente y artístico de los 90, A Tribe Called Quest inauguró y perfeccionó la alternativa al rap hardcore y al gangsta rap. En esencia, abandonaron la postura de macho en la que se había construido el rap, y en cambio, se enfocaron en la filosofía abstracta y en los temas con mensaje. Tribe se enfrentó con muchos problemas: violación en citas, el uso de la palabra "nigger", los juicios y tribulaciones de la industria del rap– y todo ello sobrepasó el juego ocasional de la docena.
