Katy J Pearson

Bristol-based singer/songwriter Katy J Pearson lends her radiant, high-tremolo vocals to country-tinged, 1970s-influenced songs that often share an affectionate, breezy feel. Her debut album, Return, appeared in 2020. Two years later, Sound of the Morning found her diversifying her sound with grittier input from Speedy Wunderground founder Dan Carey on select tracks. Hailing from Gloucestershire, England, Pearson was originally part of the indie pop duo Ardyn alongside her brother, Rob Pearson. They were signed to London label National Anthem, which put pressure on the siblings to write hit songs; the creative tension soon came to a head, with the label dropping them in the process. Meanwhile, the siblings had been covertly writing songs that they enjoyed, leading to Katy stepping up as a solo artist, with Rob acting as her co-writer. Things started to gel for Pearson after relocating to the Bristol music scene, where she continued to write and try out material. She eventually signed with Heavenly Recordings, which gave her more creative freedom, culminating in the full-length debut Return in 2020. In 2021, Pearson turned up on the compilation Songs Without Authors, Vol. 1 from London-based folk label/collective Broadside Hacks. Around that time, she also provided guest vocals on Orlando Weeks' album Hop Up. Meanwhile, she rejoined Return producer, engineer, and mixer Ali Chant in the studio and brought in producer and Speedy Wunderground label runner Dan Carey for some of the tracks for her second album. Released in July 2022, Sound of the Morning featured guest spots from Weeks and Black Midi drummer Morgan Simpson.
