Tras el gran éxito comercial que supuso Dark Side of the Moon, Pink Floyd publicó Wish You Were Here, un disco vagamente conceptual acerca de y dedicado a Syd Barrett, miembro fundador del grupo. El disco se va desarrollando gradualmente, a medida que las texturas jazzísticas de "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" van revelando el eje melódico que mueve la canción. Con su ritmo pausado, el disco se revela como más cálido que su predecesor. Desde el punto de vista musical, se podría decir que resulta aún más imponente, ya que exhibe la interacción del grupo y los solos de David Gilmour sobre todo.
